Jo Kondo, born in Tokyo in 1947, writes music of isolated sounds and thin lines, where each event is left to resonate before the next arrives and nothing is developed in the usual sense. This 1991 disc on ALM gathers five chamber works: The Serotinous, Bonjin, Yokohama, Ars Brevis and Res Sonorae.
Kondo has described his approach as linear music, sounds placed one by one along a single thread rather than stacked into harmony, and the pieces here have the transparency that results, every instrument audible on its own. Res Sonorae, over fifteen minutes, is the longest and closes the disc. Issued only on CD.
