Fratto9 present a special volume of the “seven inch series”, a series of coloured 7 inches in limited and numbered edition of 200, this time covering Veryan Weston and Scanner. "Veryan Weston "Make"  Make is a collaborative project which, at the moment involves my partner - Jill Weston and singer Iris Ederer. Language can generate structure as well as meaning. The project uses 52 quotations by women writers and can be used in various ways. These ways will be determined by the situation in which they are performed. For example: who is performing, how many, instrumentation, how long there is to rehearse etc. Each quotation has the word 'make'* in it. This word can be used thematically or as a structuring devise.

The first idea was conceived for a submission earlier this year to a new Italian competition called Sonic Arts Award. A multi-tracked version (press 'Play' just below) sung by Iris Ederer was submitted and won an award in the ‘experimental’ category. The following statement described this a capella setting: the piece is an experiment in two ways. The first is by using language as a means of generating rhythm as opposed to solely generating meaning. The purpose was to create mystery by concealing the meaning of each individual message and to overlay them with each other. Words could then be seen to become a poetic abstraction in sound. The second way is to use music as a means of generating meaning, where sound unifies the separate voices. It was realised that five simultaneous statements would be enough to mask any clear linguistic message. The statements are sung using one pitch. Because there are five statements, there is a chord of five notes, i.e. a pentatonic chord/scale as used in the Tessellations pieces



Scanner Tokyonin  This composition was created whilst travelling, originally on headphones on a train across Europe, as commuters sat and read their newspapers and drifted away. The countryside that passed by became part of the image for the music, which sometimes reminded me of travelling through Japan so the title reflects this orientation.
London based artist and composer Robin Rimbaud - Scanner traverses the experimental terrain between sound, space image and form, creating absorbing, multilayered sound pieces that twist technology in unconventional ways, connecting a bewilderingly diverse array of genres. Since 1991 he has been intensely active in sonic art, producing concerts, installations and recordings, the albums Mass Observation (1994),Delivery (1997), and The Garden is Full of Metal (1998) hailed by critics as innovative and inspirational works of contemporary electronic music. Most recently Scanner designed the campaign for Sprint phones in cinemas across America, reaching 2.5 billion viewers.
