Nuó Xiǎng finds Peruvian flautist and composer Camilo Ángeles and Chinese vocal artist and technologist Qiujiang Levi Lu transforming their long‑form improvisational practice into a concentrated electroacoustic rite. Collaborating since 2022, the duo has shaped a language in which custom‑built DSP systems, live electronic processing and an augmented flute vocabulary collide with extended vocal techniques to generate soundscapes that feel at once hyper‑modern and haunted by very old spirits. Rather than treating technology as a gloss on acoustic performance, they fold software, microphones and speakers into the core of the music, turning the whole setup into a single, unstable instrument.

The title 傩响 Nuó Xiǎng points directly to that spiritual charge. “Nuó” names one of the oldest ritual traditions in Chinese culture, a complex of ceremonies, masks and dances designed to negotiate with unseen forces, while Nuó Xiǎng can be understood as “the echoes of the ritual ceremony,” the resonance that lingers after the formal rite has ended. Ángeles and Qiujiang lean into this idea of after‑sound: their pieces feel like transmissions captured in the wake of something that has already happened, fragments of chant, breath and noise refracted through digital circuits and acoustic bodies. The music does not illustrate the ritual so much as inhabit its echo, working with traces, ghosts, residual energies.
