CD version. Recoiled gathers five remixes that Coil made of Nine Inch Nails songs in the 1990s, pieces that stayed officially unreleased for some two decades. It came out in 2014 on Cold Spring, presented by the label as a compilation of Coil's unreleased work for the American group. These are long, slow reworkings of Gave Up and of three songs from The Downward Spiral, and they often travel a long way from the originals.
Trent Reznor, a long-time Coil admirer and collaborator, asked the group to remix four songs and sent over the original multitracks and DAT tapes. According to Cold Spring, Danny Hyde and Peter Christopherson each mixed their own versions in their early home studios, then met to synchronise the two into these masters, using baby alarms and lengths of wire for custom effects. The label adds that Jhonn Balance is also present. The mixes were long rumoured to exist, and the label credits the persistence of a dedicated Nine Inch Nails fan forum with tracking them down. Four of them had already circulated on Uncoiled, a download-only release.
Gave Up (Open My Eyes) builds its layers slowly, and the guitars of the original arrive only late in the mix. Closer (Unrecalled) is an alternate, fuller version of the track, with extra ambient effects and sequences, and the label sticker links it to the version heard in the film Se7en. The Downward Spiral (A Gilded Sickness) stretches the song to eight minutes of screeching textures at a crawl. The two takes on Eraser close the disc: Reduction is built from manipulated vocals and feedback, and the Baby Alarm Remix is a further version from the same sessions that was not part of Uncoiled.
In Regen, Ilker Yücel noted how much the mixes share with earlier versions on Fixed and Further Down the Spiral, while hearing in them the range of Coil's process, and wrote that A Gilded Sickness "screeches and slithers at a languid pace that seeps its way into the subconscious". J.C. Maçek III was more reserved in PopMatters, but found that the Closer remix "becomes something that the original version was never quite intended to be: beautiful."
Single CD in a digipak, released by Cold Spring in 2014 (CSR193CD), running just under 39 minutes. Mastered by Gregg Janman and remastered for Cold Spring by Martin Bowes, it includes the Baby Alarm Remix of Eraser, which was missing from Uncoiled.
