Seduced by (a) last year is artist, musician, and researcher, Andreas Hiroui Larsson’s first album under his own name and which features his interdisciplinary music. Larsson weaves together materials from his art, music, and philosophy practices by way of an interdisciplinary artisticmethod, in which imagery, live improvisation, recordings, and text investigate the purpose of one another by entering each other’s fields, andperforming each other’s roles. Larsson’s music constitutes a layered hybridworld, in which composition and improvisation, the fictitious and the real, the personal and the public are constructions within a critical andexplorative whole.
"I have for many years been interested in developing an interdisciplinary artistic practice with which I can combine the materials that I produce in my art, music, and philosophy practices and let them enter each other’s fields, play each other’s roles, and fulfil the purposes of one another. Seduced by (a) last year marks an early step in the development of such an interdisciplinary method and practice.
Seduced by (a) last year is perhaps more of an artistic method than a conventional musical composition. The method that I use is to compile materials that tell the collective history of the members of my ensemble in digital archives on USB flash drives to be improvised with on laptops via a beamer, speakers, and to be read aloud into microphones. Since Johanna Arve is a visual artist, most of the materials in her archives are of photographic and textual kind and represent works that we have made together over the past ten years. Johan Jutterström is a musician that I have known and worked with since almost twenty years, thereby the materials in his archives span from recordings and texts to parts where he and I improvise together live on our respective instruments.
One can think of the improvising with both the materials in the digital archives and the live improvisation by Jutterström and me as voices in the music. These voices are structured by the main text that I read aloud and which runs throughout the piece and in part determines the duration. Arve and Jutterström follow the main text in the score, in which dynamics and instructions as to when to improvise and with what archives are written out. – Andreas Hiroui Larsson
