Nini Rosso's Il Silenzio sold ten million copies in 1965 and made a Turin trumpeter into an international name, nowhere more than in Japan, where he toured repeatedly and where this compilation was assembled. Rosso's tone was a bugle call with a heart, and he applied it to everything: Neapolitan songs, film themes, the intermezzo from Wolf-Ferrari's I gioielli della Madonna that gives the album its title.

The Italian trumpet ballad is a genre in itself, running from Rosso and his imitators to Ennio Morricone's Il Buono, il Brutto, il Cattivo, and this is the popular face of it: sentimental, clean, played with a tone you can hear from the next room. Japanese Globe pressing.
