Chapter Seven, Bengt Berger’s Swedish supergroup of three saxophones, two basses and two drummers, on its 1988 Jazz in Sweden album: West African and Indian accents, with tunes by Ornette Coleman and Offenbach.

CD version. The Jazz in Sweden award in 1988 was given to the Chapter Seven group. The founder of the group, Bengt Berger, born in 1942, is one of Sweden’s foremost drummers and percussionists. Since the end of the 1960s he has played in/founded a large number of jazz and cross over groups and constellations. He has played with musicians from a wide variety of musical styles.

Bengt Berger has studied the art of Tablas in India and he is a specialist in West Africa drumming.

1986 he formed Chapter Seven, a group with a singular setting influenced by West African music: Two drummers, two bass players, three saxophonists and, occasionally, trombone. All the members of the group are renowned jazz musicians and you can by right call it a super group. Anders Kjellberg plays drums together with Bengt Berger, Anders Jormin and Sergei Muchin play double bass, Tomas Gustafson, Roland Keijser and Lennart Åberg play soprano and tenor saxophones and Nils Landgren participates on trombone.

The group plays mostly its own compositions with a West African and Indian touch, tunes by Ornette Coleman and Jacques Offenbach are also included and provide a kind of framework for the improvisations.
