The Creative Arts Ensemble was the only large group to come directly out of Horace Tapscott's Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra, and pianist Kaeef Ruzadun Ali built it on the same principles: community first, spiritual seriousness throughout, and absolutely no interest in what the industry wanted. This 12" pairs the full unreleased version of "Unity", taken from the 1983 New Horizons sessions and running over nine minutes with vocals by Ali's sister B.J. Crowley, with "Spring Ran (Into Summer)", previously buried on a CD-only release from 1998. Both on vinyl for the first time. Los Angeles underground jazz of the deepest kind.
Limited to 500 copies, pressed in Germany, released under licence from Kaeef Ruzadun. Long gone at source and increasingly asked after.
