*150 copies limited edition* Zulaqrex, named after a mythical being that only exists in Richard Youngs’ head, is the album sequel to the now practically sold out Zerkelus LP and once again features themed artwork and is limited to 150 copies. Like its predecessor, Zulaqrex consists of two side-long tracks both given the same name as the title and once more charting a course into the beyond via a hypnotic approach that even some fantastically stumbling percussion cannot offset. Also employing shimmering pulses, carefully tempered dissonance, Ayler-like blasting and what sometimes seems like the perfect blend of a corrugaphone and voice, this is music that captures the essence of the beast rising from a sulphuric mist being heralded by creatures dancing spasmodically whilst wielding instruments made of wood, bone, skin as a nearby radar goes haywire. It is a sound as euphoric as it is mesmerising, out of this world and slightly foreboding.
As with most of Richard’s previous work for Fourth Dimension Records, Zulaqrex taps into his gift for creating music that can pull the listener into a sonic world where anything can happen at any time. It’s a place that nobody should ever feel too comfortable in because if there’s one defining quality to his work then it’s a sense of utter restlessness thankfully channelled into shapes we can derive sonic nourishment from. Richard Youngs, of course, remains a prolific artist whose work can swing from the wildest avant-garde sounds to melodic songs, but we are always happy to have him back here regardless of where his mood takes him.
