Hijokaidan, meaning "emergency stairway", is a Japanese noise and free improvisation group with a revolving line-up that has ranged from a duo to as many as fourteen members in its early days. Its one constant is the guitarist Yoshiyuki "Jojo" Hiroshige, founder and owner of the Osaka label Alchemy Records, home to much of the country's noise scene. The group began at the very end of the 1970s as a performance-art project whose anarchic shows involved the destruction of venues and equipment, food and rubbish thrown around, and worse.
