The most surprising turn in a long career. Phil Woods had spent the fifties and sixties as the most fluent bop altoist in New York, moved to France at the end of the decade, and formed a band with Gordon Beck, Henri Texier and Daniel Humair that played considerably freer and harder than anything he had done before. The European Rhythm Machine pushed him into open forms, electric textures and a level of aggression that his American reputation would never have predicted. Montreux 1969 catches it live and at full intensity.
