Editions Mego present one longform exploratory performance from Sunn 0)))'s Stephan O'Malley, recorded in Paris during the winter of 2006 and recently excavated, revamped, and mastered at Piethopraxis in Köln. The first in a series of three cassette releases for EMego, the 40+ minutes of 'Cocon & Oiseau De Nuit' are similar in form to his 'Keep An Eye Out' LP for Table Of The Elements and the 'Salt' album for iDEAL recordings, wresting the blackest sub-harmonics and inherent micro-tonal shifts from ultra-minimal guitar technique. The effect is utterly immersive whether experienced on headphones or speakers (the recommended method), saturating your surroundings in scarred and bruising amp feedback below dry, dull clouds of ferric interference. As the piece evolves O'Malley generates ever-more hypnotic swells of visceral, churned feedback conducted with stoic grace and instinctive control, flooding the space with monstrous abstract shapes and unheimlich apparitions. A special booklet accompanies the cassette, but we're having trouble making out what is actually printed inside, if there's actually anything at all. A substantial release from a true shamen of drone music.
