*300 copies limited edition* With three studio albums, four live releases and a number of tours, the Belgian-British Kodian Trio has built up quite a reputation within the European improvisation scene. The trio unites the attention to texture and detail often associated with the 'English school' with the fierce urgency of the 'fire music' of the sixties and seventies. The result is a wringing cocktail on the seesaw between European free improvisation and witty free jazz. Dirk Serries' disordered playing on the electric guitar regularly functions as an ideal contrast to the impressive mastery of saxophonist Colin Webster (here on alto) and the versatility and intuition of Andrew Lisle. The title - 'Disengage' means something like 'to disconnect' - already suggests a change of course, and this has mainly to do with the presence of two guests: pianist Martina Verhoeven (Serries' partner), a self-taught artist who developed a very own style, and trumpeter Charlotte Keeffe, who is well on her way to becoming a key player on the British scene.
They provide a broadening of the group sound, which initially seems less pointed and explosive, but actually just changes the gun shoulder. There are plenty of moments that are filled with a pointillist sound game and subdued bouncing back and forth of ideas, but as soon as the collective engine starts you end up in a powerful whirlwind of sound. It blows a refreshing and sometimes nuanced wind through the Kodian universe, which keeps moving with a stubborn disregard for that autopilot.
CD comes in a beautiful gatefold sleeve, designed by Rutger Zuydervelt with photography of Martina Verhoeven.
