LP version. Limited edition of 300 copies with full cover and art innersleeve. Musica Per Immagini proudly presents the first-ever vinyl pressing of a carefully curated selection of Piero Piccioni's music for “L'Italia Vista Dal Cielo”, a rare opportunity to explore his extraordinary musical imagination beyond his better-known and acclaimed film scores.
Created by renowed filmmaker Folco Quilici, “L'Italia Vista Dal Cielo” was an ambitious documentary series produced between 1966 and 1978 for Esso Italiana that offered a remarkable new perspective on Italy's landscapes, architectural treasures, cultural heritage and regional identities. Through breathtaking aerial photography, Folco Quilici revealed a country suspended between its ancient history and the profound social and economic transformations of the twentieth century. Among the distinguished composers who contributed to the series was Piero Piccioni, one of the most sophisticated and versatile figures in the history of Italian film music. His compositions for the documentaries Lazio, Lombardia and Toscana capture the spirit of these regions with an remarkable sensitivity to atmosphere, movement and visual storytelling. Far removed from the conventions of the traditional travelogue soundtrack, his music unfolds as a fascinating exploration of mood, colour and texture. His unmistakable musical language, shaped by a lifelong passion for jazz and an exceptional gift for melody, moves effortlessly between refined orchestral writing, delicate lyrical passages, evocative instrumental arrangements and subtle rhythmic interplay.
These compositions reveal a particularly compelling side of Piero Piccioni's artistry. Freed from the narrative constrains of fictional cinema, the composer finds inspiration in the landscapes themselves, allowing his music to evoke the changing character of Italy's countryside, cities and historical landmarks. The result is a richly atmospheric listening experience in which images and sounds retain their own identities while enriching one another. Beyond their original documentary setting, these recordings stand as remarkable examples of the imagination and expressive freedom that made Piero Piccioni's work so distinctive. They also offer a fascinating opportunity to explore a lesser-known chapter in the catalogue of a composer celebrated for his contributions to some of the finest achievements of Italian cinema. An essential release for soundtrack collectors, admirers of library music and anyone drawn to the timeless elegance of Italy's golden age of cinematic sound.
Three regions. One great composer. A hidden chapter of Italian film music, finally on vinyl.
