LP version. Second pressing, limited to 500 copies. Dedicated to the defiance of Christine Miller. The complete, unabridged recording of FBI tape Q 042, made on Saturday, November 18th 1978 at Jonestown, the settlement the Peoples Temple had built in the Guyanese jungle. That afternoon, after Congressman Leo Ryan and four others were shot dead at the nearby Port Kaituma airstrip, Jim Jones gathered his followers in the pavilion and ordered what he called revolutionary suicide. More than 900 people died, about a third of them children. First issued by False Prophets Recording Company in 2024 as Jim Jones Live! A Gun To The People's Temple.
From the label: Reverend Jim Jones commands The Peoples Temple to commit an act of revolutionary suicide. In this recording you will hear the final moments Rev. Jones and his followers make the case for poison as one brave soul defiantly opposes. "It's not to be feared, it's a friend." (Rev. Jim Jones). File under: Spiritual Taboo/Spiritual Warfare.
The voice that opposes is Christine Miller, a 60-year-old member from Los Angeles, who argues for an airlift to the Soviet Union, defends the children's right to live and insists that as long as there is life there is hope, until the crowd shouts her down. The recorder was stopped and restarted dozens of times, so the 44 minutes on the tape may span up to four hours. It was one of about 970 tapes recovered by the FBI at Jonestown.
The reel already carried soul and R&B songs, among them I'm Sorry by The Delfonics, The Pain Gets A Little Deeper by Darrow Fletcher and Never Give You Up by Jerry Butler. A faulty erase head and the slower tape speed left them playing at half speed under the voices: this is the low, slow drone, similar to organ music, heard for the whole length of the recording. Side A runs 22:43, side B 21:49.
