On disc for the first time: the complete soundtracks to two much-discussed, intriguing 1970s films by Grzegorz Królikiewicz. Henryk Kuźniak's music for them goes far beyond the classic boundaries of film scoring. The monumental sound of the orchestra and unusual sonic experiments realised at the Polish Radio Experimental Studio form a whole that still leaves no listener indifferent.
Królikiewicz's auteur cinema of the 1970s delighted some and repelled others, but it could leave nobody indifferent. Both Na wylot and Wieczne pretensje push beyond ordinary cinema in their form, trying to convey much more through image and through sound alike. This is where Kuźniak's role was so important: in both films he took care of the music and also of what today is called sound design. For Na wylot he created an extraordinary soundtrack that stands up perfectly apart from the picture; it intrigues, makes you think and surprises with every new listen. Wieczne pretensje has more music in the classic illustrative sense, led by the bravura tango of the opening titles. The programme is completed by the music from the short film Nie płacz, on which Królikiewicz and Kuźniak first had the chance to rehearse ideas that later went into Na wylot.
The material from all three films was remastered from original tapes held in the archives of the Feature Film Studio (Wytwórnia Filmów Fabularnych) in Wrocław (Wieczne pretensje), the Documentary and Feature Film Studio in Warsaw (Nie płacz) and the artist's private archive (Na wylot). An extensive booklet carries an essay by Dr Michał Dondzik, the foremost specialist in Królikiewicz's cinema. The disc continues the joint series of the Wrocław Feature Film Studio and GAD Records presenting the most interesting film music recordings from the studio's archives.
Wieczne pretensje (tracks 1 to 8) is performed by the Polish Radio Grand Symphony Orchestra conducted by Jerzy Maksymiuk, Na wylot (tracks 9 to 17) by an orchestra also conducted by Maksymiuk, and Nie płacz closes the disc (track 18).
