From lyrical strings to experimental avant-garde: four films, four different soundtracks and one singular composer. Cienie czasu gathers lesser-known but absolutely fascinating episodes from the rich output of a master of Polish film music, made in the Łódź factory of the unexpected.
Henryk Kuźniak's collaboration with the Educational Film Studio (Wytwórnia Filmów Oświatowych, WFO) in Łódź spanned more than a decade of music with a remarkably wide stylistic range. It runs from avant-garde sonoristic research (Lubię kolor czerwony… zielony… żółty) through unexpected folk inspirations (Cienie czasu) to masterly themes written for strings and flute (Manekiny Tadeusza Kantora), all deftly processed with the help of Eugeniusz Rudnik and the equipment gathered at the Polish Radio Experimental Studio. Together the pieces document a lesser-known but equally gripping side of Kuźniak. In the year of the composer's 90th birthday he could hardly be missing from the series devoted to music from the WFO archives.
Cienie czasu has been remastered from the original tapes in the WFO archive, and the booklet includes film stills and an essay on the composer's work. The album continues the series uncovering the rich musical archives of the WFO in Łódź, whose sound legacy was shaped by figures as distinguished as Zdzisław Szostak, Krzysztof Komeda, Bogusław Schaeffer and Józef Skrzek. The programme: Manekiny Tadeusza Kantora (tracks 1 to 4), Cienie czasu (tracks 5 to 7), Lubię kolor czerwony… zielony… żółty… (tracks 8 to 10) and We dwoje (tracks 11 to 14).
