*2022 stock* Several of György Ligeti's best-known and most characteristic pieces, in recordings made within a few years of their composition by the musicians closest to them. Atmosphères for large orchestra without percussion and Lux aeterna for sixteen-part mixed choir a cappella are the two works that Stanley Kubrick used in 2001: A Space Odyssey, and they are still the purest examples of Ligeti's micropolyphony: dense webs of lines that merge into slowly shifting clouds of sound.

Atmosphères is played by the Südwestfunk Symphony Orchestra Baden-Baden under Ernest Bour, Lux aeterna sung by the Schola Cantorum Stuttgart under Clytus Gottwald. Ramifications appears in both its versions, for string orchestra and for twelve solo strings, with the players divided into groups tuned slightly apart, so that the harmony seems to blur and sour from within; here the Saarbrücken Radio Chamber Orchestra is conducted by Antonio Janigro.

The Kammerkonzert for 13 instrumentalists, with its harpsichord and Hammond organ, its mechanical textures and sudden breakdowns, is performed by the Viennese Ensemble "die reihe" under Friedrich Cerha, and it is one of the finest things Ligeti wrote. Total time 54'48".
