Original exhibition poster, 1987. Big Size. A rare document from the origins of the legendary Broken Music project. In 1987, a small Hamburg gallery—an artists' cooperative—invited Ursula Block of gelbe MUSIK to organize a groundbreaking exhibition of artists' records. To accompany the show, this poster was printed, featuring images of exhibited objects and short texts. The exhibition followed Block's first KÜNSTLERSCHALLPLATTEN (Artists' Records) show at gelbe MUSIK in Berlin in 1986, which included records by Harry Bertoia, Joseph Beuys, Henning Christiansen, Philip Corner, Hanne Darboven, Bernard Heidsieck, Die Tödliche Doris, Jean Dubuffet, Joe Jones, Rolf Julius, Yves Klein, Milan Knížák, Christian Marclay, Nam June Paik, Charlemagne Palestine, A.R. Penck, Robert Rauschenberg, the Residents, Soviet France, Wolf Vostell, and many others—all objects for sale from Block's personal collection. This 1987 exhibition and poster became the foundation for the monumental Broken Music project, which Block developed with art historian Michael Glasmeier, drawing material from her collection and that of René Block. The comprehensive Broken Music book and touring exhibition would later travel from Berlin to France, Canada, and Australia, establishing the definitive archive of artists' records. This original 1987 poster represents a crucial moment in the documentation and legitimization of artists' sound work as a distinct artistic practice. For collectors of sound art history, gelbe MUSIK ephemera, and those who recognize Ursula Block's pioneering role in establishing the field, this is an essential artifact.
