Lotti Tauber was a Swiss pianist and composer whose music circulated almost only on albums she pressed privately in the 1980s, in the last decade of her life. This first archival volume, released by Freedom To Spend, gathers a selection of those recordings, made in Zurich between 1981 and 1986 by Walter Allenspach (two tracks with Beat Hoffmann).
Tauber's piano is minimalist and personal, with unusual techniques, improvisation and intuition placed inside the chance-based structures that were central to her intellectual and spiritual life. Two titles come from the I Ching ('Kun - Das Empfangene, Die Erde, Die Mutter' and 'Kan - Das Abgründige, Das Wasser'), others are as plain as 'Salut!', 'Lonely' or 'Borderline'. The music moves between pain and joy, the two extremes that marked her life, and brings the avant-garde down to the scale of something intimate.
