AMM

Newfoundland is a single, unbroken AMM performance of seventy-six minutes, given in the summer of 1992 by the trio of Eddie Prévost, Keith Rowe and John Tilbury. By the mid 1980s the group had moved from the harsh, aggressive sound of its early years towards a quieter, more contemplative music. AllMusic's reviewer counted this concert among its finest albums, and among the easiest ways into AMM and electroacoustic improvisation in general.

The concert was given at the School of Music of Memorial University in St. John's, Newfoundland, on 2 July 1992, as part of Sound Symposium 6. Prévost plays percussion, Tilbury piano and Rowe guitar and electronics. The piece moves from the softest brushed cymbals to dense electronic storms. In The Wire, Biba Kopf wrote that "AMM's singular shocking moment in Newfoundland is stretched to a taut 76 minute whole". He picked out distant chimes, dank knots of piano notes and the bowel-rattling roar of Rowe's guitar electronics. Tilbury, a noted Feldman interpreter, slips melodic fragments into the texture. Late in the piece a radio voice comes through Rowe's pickup, briefly anchoring the night in a time and place. In his note for the release, the composer Howard Skempton calls the music "so stunningly immediate, so palpable" that descriptive adjectives become useless.
