The album Can tried to make vanish. Out Of Reach, from 1978, is the unusual case of a major band publicly renouncing its own work: kept off the Spoon reissue series for decades, struck from the official discography, obtainable for years only through this Thunderbolt pressing. Holger Czukay had all but gone, demoted to the occasional sound effect before quitting outright, while the ex-Traffic pair Rosko Gee and Rebop Kwaku Baah pulled the music toward a stiff funk and reggae that Jaki Liebezeit's drumming could not quite loosen. Conny Plank produced, Czukay having refused.
The instrumental November is the stretch most listeners rescue. A record of a band coming apart, collectable for precisely the unhappiness surrounding it.
