The Noise Musician's Noise Musician, Scott Reber of Rhode Island presents a jaw-dropping slab of two noise symphonies for Type. In operation for over a decade now, Reber has amassed a plethora of CDrs, tapes and the odd vinyl under myriad names and in scant quantity, many known only to the Rhode Island fraternity, like this one originally released on his Three Songs Of Lenin label in 2012. As the title infers, 'The Phone About To Ring' is focused on manipulating the listener's sense of anticipation, and does so with something approaching tantric levels of suspense and deferred gratification. Rather than repel or frighten, his bracing, howling maelstroms lure us in to reveal grandly dilapidated harmonic structures worthy of Fennesz or Tim Hecker, but void of their sometimes overbearing sentiments. It's an effect closer to the stranded, supernatural isolationism of Thomas Köner or Kevin Drumm, yet rent with a more miasmic, frayed and psychedelic appeal. Both pieces have been remastered by the artist himself for this vinyl issue, refining his pent, ominous and massive abstract shapes with steady hands akin to a chamber musician playing to ancient gods.
