Repetition of the same dream emerged from collaboration under unusual circumstances: during the early Covid-19 lockdown, Clara de Asis and Mara Winter found themselves together in Basel, using both a local church and a midnight tunnel to explore the limits of breath, resonance, and intuition. The album, spanning five works for flute, percussion, and electronics, is shaped as much by its resonant spaces and spontaneous method as by pre-composed material. The duo dissolves rigid lines between composer and performer, allowing pieces such as “A passage through” to take on their final form only in dialogue with the setting and the moment.

Throughout, there is a persistent interest in ambiguity - air sounds on the verge of melody, timbres exchanging places, streams of sound colored by gentle electronics and occasional noise. The listener drifts through gently structured episodes: “Still water” evokes shifting sonic colors by means of slight variations, while “Wind that walks” lingers at the border of pitch and breath, its material suspended between recollection and discovery. The title piece and “Present omission” are linked by recurring gestures experienced in shifting perspectives, contributing to the dreamlike sense of repetition and transformation without fixity.

Asis and Winter favor an intuitive, process-oriented approach, refraining from imposing single solutions or fixed roles. Instead, each work is allowed to unfold according to context, shaped by the acoustics of the church and their shared sensibility. What results is an atmosphere at once intimate and uncertain, gentle but edged with quiet experimentalism. The album stands out among the Another Timbre catalogue for its softly immersive world, balancing subtle compositional rigor with the unpredictability of live, site-sensitive realization. Repetition of the same dream is less a showcase for individual virtuosity and more an invitation into a shared process of listening and memory. Every sound here is deliberate but never overdetermined—a contemplative gesture toward ambiguity and possibility in a world momentarily paused, attentive to the richness found in breath, space, and repeated transformation.
