By 1973 Gary Burton had already changed what four mallets could do, and this is the band where he decided to start again from scratch. The New Quartet introduces the young Mick Goodrick on guitar, and the interplay between vibraphone and guitar becomes the whole architecture of the record: two chordal instruments circling the same harmonic space, sometimes doubling, more often deliberately getting in each other's way. Material by Chick Corea, Carla Bley and Keith Jarrett gives the group a wide brief and they take it, moving from folk-clear melody to genuine abstraction without changing gear.

Japanese ECM pressing. Burton's vibraphone recorded with that early-seventies ECM clarity, which is to say beautifully.
