Recorded in rural eastern Washington State, Walk in Praise of All Metals reflects the raw expanses of the
‘Channel Scablands’, a region which gladly bares the scars of ancient volcanism, ice age floods, &
hydroelectric power. Like the landscape—born of cataclysm, yet steady in its austerity, the music speaks
through sustained resonance and momentary intersections. Structure emerges through shared
harmonics, with passages from Matt Sargent’s re-tuned guitar (13-Limit just intonation) activating
sympathetic vibrations in the strings of Ben Luca Robertson’s handmade instruments. In performance,
electro-magnetic induction, spectral processing, and physical preparations color the sound through direct
& recursive interventions with the actuated strings.

Ben Luca Robertson is a composer, sound artist, experimental luthier, educator, and co-founder of the independent record label, Aphonia Recordings. As a practicing artist, he employs a variety of instrumental and electronic forces, including chamber ensembles, generative algorithms, analog circuits, and handmade instrumentation. The bulk of his projects address an interest in autonomous processes, landscape, and biological systems — often supplanting narrative structure with an emphasis on the physicality of sound and place, just intonation, spectral tuning structures, and microtonality. Ben lives and works in rural
eastern Washington, where he teaches & directs Eastern Washington University’s Music Technology program.

Matt Sargent is a composer, guitarist, and recording engineer based in New York, where he is an assistant professor of music at Bard College. A versatile artist with an international reputation for his prolific musical life on the concert stage and in the recording studio, Sargent’s music has been described as “remarkable from all angles” (Colin Clarke, Fanfare Magazine) and “this music isn’t about following in anyone’s footsteps; it uses bare resources to establish a bounded and essential place.” (Bill Meyer, The Wire Magazine) His music has been released on Cold Blue Music, Sawyer Editions, Neuma Records, A Wave Press, Waveform Alphabet, and Marginal Frequency, among many others.
