Amon Düül II came out of the Munich commune scene of the late 1960s and became one of the central groups of German rock. Wolf City, released by United Artists in 1972, followed the double albums Yeti and Tanz der Lemminge and is more compact, with songs that rarely pass seven minutes. The core line-up was Renate Knaup on vocals, Chris Karrer on guitar and violin, John Weinzierl on guitar, Lothar Meid on bass, Falk-Ulrich Rogner on organ and synthesizer and Daniel Fichelscher on drums.
Guests widened the palette: Al Gromer Khan on sitar and Pandit Shankar Lal on tabla, Olaf Kübler on soprano saxophone, Peter Leopold on synthesizer and timpani. Next to longer songs such as Surrounded By The Stars and Wie Der Wind Am Ende Einer Strasse there is the brief Deutsch Nepal. The record balances psychedelic rock, space-rock textures and folk-tinged melody.
