"Across two sides that sweep the wildest part of her live-played sonic imaginarium, Gaël Segalen entices us down the road of sensory enlightenment and shamanic abstraction. Caught in a web of tormented, exotica-laced visions and off-piste electronic ramblings, we’re faced with a layered and complex labyrinth of sound, bristling with strange solar-powered flora and the most elusive of e-faunas. Threading our way into these uncharted nooks and crannies as if on a speleological excursion to find a long-lost civilisation, its sunken monuments and buried artefacts, Segalen soundtracks that journey with a mutant tapestry of chiselled field-recordings, electro-acoustic hoodoo and further musique concrète-leaning bursts of mystique-imbued brilliance. Recorded live in Bordeaux, the side A tells an empirical tale of introspective voyage as it cuts a path of mental elevation across sequences of serene, therapeutic soundscaping and noise-adjacent reliefs. Welcome in a utopian no man’s land in sound where washed-out pad tapestries and converging flows of analogue experimentation rub shoulders with revamped serial music tropes and industrial-informed motifs.
The haunted side B, recorded for Instants Chavirés the same year (2019), conjures up Segalen’s concept of direct communication with the world through sound - after which she astutely coined her project ‘IhearU’. Rerouting field-recording into a practical raw matter of rhythmic and telluric essence, the French producer weaves an immersive web of trance-inducing spiritual music as told via smouldering tape echo’d incantations and intricate layers of organic synthesis. The result couldn’t be a more captivating tableau of antagonistic forces, with its downwind thrusts and brutal headwinds, coagulating expanses of meditative serenity and eerie drifts into Segalen’s most intimate headspace. Be warned that the ride you’re embarking on shall awaken long dormant demons and forgotten memories along the way. Time to cast off and zone out." - Baptiste Girou
