Assessments and Translations holds four double-tracked cello pieces by Tony Moore, each one his reading of a score made with the artist Josep Vallribera. The scores came out of two days of meetings at an atelier in Lower Saxony, Germany, in February 1995, organised with the Galerie Erik Bausmann in Mainz. Vallribera, whose practice he calls gesto-grafia, is credited for the scores and for the gestural conducting behind them.
Moore describes the record on the back cover as "an interpretation of four scores with variations", conceived with Vallribera in Germany and recorded afterwards in Amsterdam. He did so at Basement Tape Studios on 7 May 1995, with Rob Garner engineering. Where his earlier solo set Observations was played straight through without overdubs, here two cello parts are layered in each piece. The four movements last between nine and fifteen minutes, about 45 minutes in all. One of the scores, photographed by Hildegund Jenninger, is reproduced on the cover.
Released by Matchless Recordings in 1995 as MRCD 28, on CD.
