"Another window opens - and with it, another singular mystery of modern impressionism joins the catalogue of Les Disques Omnison. Classicaly trained yet reshaped by Paris experimental and improvisation scene, Jeanne Gorisse pushes her "bass" practice further on her second solo album, a follow-up to her 2024 debut "Immersion Libre". Alongside the double bass, she explores bowed electric bass, and re-records herself to tape on several tracks; creating an intimate dialogue between the acoustic and the electric.

To introduce Moires, one might obviously summon the lineage of the experimental bass mavericks in France - Joëlle Léandre, for example... Yet, Jeanne catches the listener off-balance, blending lyrical improvisation with a distinctly modern sensibility, recalling Rachel's chamber music & post-rock crossover, and echoing the raw energy of teenage bedroom rock through deliberately imperfect electric riffs. In doing so, Moires expands the vocabulary of solo bowed instruments, 57 years after Barre Philipps opening the continuum of solo bass recording with his diametrically different Unaccompanied Barre (1969, very first solo bass recording). Moving beyond the choice between virtuosity and textural research, to embrace the one of narrative forms. The bass becomes a voice capable of fragile motifs and distorted gestures. Moments of lyricism give way to percussive, almost physical plucks and bows, emphasizing the materiality of the instrument. It allows the album to quietly dissolve genre boundaries. While it resonates with the modern classical and underground noise of cellists Lucy Railton and Leila Bordreuil, the world of Jeanne’s guiding presence Félicie Bazelaire, and the spacious minimalism of composers like Éliane Radigue or Pauline Oliveros, she takes the road of a strikingly stripped-down instrument, unmediated by electronics and production reduced to some very simple re-recordings used to echo and layer her playing.

Without a doubt, this is a highly personal mix influenced by Jeanne's experience of playing and improvising in different contexts; from playing classical and ancient music to club-culture fueled music, from playing in Paris underground venues like Les Instants Chavirés, Le Non Jazz or Chair de Poule to composing soundtracks for theater. A status that reflects a new generation of talented experimental musicians for whom stylistic scenes no longer exist in isolation, one that navigates music landscapes transformed by globalization, post-internet culture, the collapse of hierarchies between "high" and "low" cultures, for whom hybridity is a lived musical reality, equally at ease performing in different settings everyday. This versatility finds one of its expression on Moires. Within this world, Jeanne Gorisse’s bowed-bass-centered approach stands out for its radical rawness, offering a direct and quiet powerful voice."
