On Testing the Waters, crys cole follows water through five electroacoustic chapters of drift, friction and slow transformation. Field recordings, instruments and electronics seep into one another, forming a 2023 WDR 3 commission where trickles, resonances and submerged textures continually retune the ear, making movement feel tactile, uncertain and quietly alive.

Testing the Waters is a long-form electroacoustic composition by crys cole, unfolding through five episodic movements that together trace a sonic dérive. Originally composed in Berlin in spring 2023 as a commission for WDR 3 Radio in Cologne, and premiered that September, the work gathers field recordings, instrumental gestures and electronic processes into a terrain that is always shifting but never hurried. Its recurring element is water: trickling, flowing, resonating, disappearing into processing and returning in altered form. Water gives the work both its title and its sensibility - a material presence that shapes the music’s movement, permeability and capacity for drift.

Rather than treating field sound as atmosphere or documentary evidence, cole lets it become compositional matter. A small flow can generate a pulse; a resonance can turn into a sustained electronic contour; a close, haptic noise can open into a larger, more diffuse space. Acoustic and synthetic elements do not behave as opposing poles. They seep into each other, accumulating grain, pressure and strange continuities. One chapter may seem to hover at the edge of audibility, attentive to minor textures and room tone; another introduces a more pronounced instrumental or electronic event, only for it to be dispersed into the broader current. The result is a work that keeps revising its own landscape while preserving an underlying sense of patient momentum.

Focused listening has long been central to cole’s practice. Born in Winnipeg in 1976 and based in Berlin, she works across electroacoustic composition, performance, sculpture and sound installation, creating subtle, evocative pieces from haptic gestures and seemingly mundane materials. Her sound world favors tactility, imperfection and ambiguity: close‑miked surfaces, environmental sounds, body and voice, electronics and traditional instruments all become ways of retuning perception. Testing the Waters extends that approach with particular clarity. It invites the listener to attend not to dramatic gestures or fixed themes, but to how sound changes while it remains present - the unevenness of a ripple, the shifting spectrum of a sustained tone, the gradual coalescence of materials that initially seem unrelated.

The title also describes a method. “Testing” suggests a tentative contact with an environment: stepping in, checking depth and temperature, allowing the body to adjust. Throughout the composition, cole does not impose a rigid route through her materials. Instead, passages are allowed to breathe, stall, scatter and reconvene. Water becomes both material and metaphor for this way of working. It slips around boundaries, takes on the character of its containers, and carries what it touches without holding it still. The piece’s five chapters function less as separate tracks than as connected zones in one extended walk, each one changing the listener’s sense of distance, density and direction.

Cole’s wider body of work has developed through extensive solo performances and collaborations with artists including Annea Lockwood, Tetuzi Akiyama, Limpe Fuchs, Toshimaru Nakamura, Francis Plagne, Taku Unami and Leif Elggren. She also maintains ongoing duos with Oren Ambarchi, and with James Rushford as Ora Clementi. Her practice has been commissioned, presented and released by institutions and labels including Black Truffle, Ultra Eczema, Second Editions, Boomkat, Issue Project Room, WDR 3, Radiophrenia and Ina GRM, while her installations and works have appeared internationally at spaces including Haus der Kulturen der Welt, South London Gallery and Art Gallery of New South Wales.

Mastering by Giuseppe Ielasi preserves the fine internal balances that give Testing the Waters its unusual pull: low‑level detail remains active, silences retain their grain, and the work’s gradual expansions land without false emphasis. Design by Matthew Young and Louise Mason frames the release with the same restraint and attentiveness that guide the music itself.
