Belgium’s avant-rock legends explore their prehistory in a special archival project. Retrieved from long-forgotten reel-to-reel tapes and cassettes, this collection of previously-unreleased tracks unveils some of the meanders which eventually led to the inception of Aksak Maboul in 1977. These 17 tracks and 80 minutes of music will take us for a stroll through moments of free rock, improv, quasi-kraut, modular & ambient electronics, and various experiments. Out on November 21 on digital, limited-edition vinyl & CD incl. booklets full of stories and old documents.

Before Aksak Maboul (documents & experiments 1969-1977) stands as a key archival release for fans and seekers of experimental music history. Compiled from unreleased tapes, sonic fragments, private studies, and collaborative sketches made by Marc Hollander before the official launch of Aksak Maboul in 1977, this collection illuminates a restless period of musical invention and cross-pollination. Hollander, in dialogue with friends and future collaborators like Vincent Kenis, sifted through and dismantled sonic boundaries—folding together homemade electronics, collage, proto-jazz improvisations, and folk tinged experiments. These early pieces reveal a searching quality, absorbed in discovery rather than destination, with lo-fi textures and raw melodic ideas foregrounding a process that is as much about play as about technique.

The album’s selections function alternately as blueprints and wild tangents, in some moments prefiguring the multi-genre fusion and surreal instrumentations of Aksak Maboul’s cult debut Onze Danses Pour Combattre la Migraine, while elsewhere departing into tape-based abstraction and musique concrète. Listeners experience a lab-like atmosphere, space where fragments circulate, mutate, and sometimes dissolve—a spirit foreshadowing both the band’s later membership in the Rock in Opposition movement and its commitment to “genre-wrecking” sound art.

Although almost half a century separates these recordings from contemporary releases, their freshness and unpredictability remain remarkable. Hollander’s approach can be heard as a loose precursor to later Crammed Discs artists, tracing a lineage in which accident and curiosity drive creation. Each track, whether a compact theme or sprawling montage, contributes a thread to the emerging tapestry of unconventional European art-pop. The result is a collection that does not merely document the birth of a band, but embodies the thrill and humility of beginnings—where music is a field of possibility, not yet hemmed in by style or expectation.
