ONJT+ (Otomo Yoshihide’s New Jazz Trio +) plays Ornette Coleman’s “Lonely Woman” and Albert Ayler’s “Bells.” ONJT means Otomo Yoshide’s New Jazz Trio; Otomo Yoshihide (guitar), Mizutani Hiroaki (bass, misc.), Yoshigaki Yasuhiro (drums, percussion), and “+” means guests for those 2 CDs: Sachiko M (sinewaves) and Jim O’Rourke (EMS synthesizer). Otomo continues his “New Jazz” project from ONJQ (Quintet) via ONJE (Ensemble) to ONJO (Orchestra), and now he organizes ONJT + (Trio +) as his core group/trio. The 2 CDs are long-expected works. Otomo tries to revive birth and death of “free jazz” using contemporary sounds and interpretations. The death of Albert Ayler was identified on October 25, 1970 at East River, N.Y.C. 40 years has past since Ayler’s death.  How did improvised music change over 40 years ? Here is the answer in some way.

ONJT + / Bells (dmf-139)

The ESP edition of Albert Ayler’s “Bells” LP was special: a tune (Bells) was included on A side only and B side had no groove. ONJT + plays 2 versions of “Bells.” Suddenly sound explosion come at us, it seems they emphasize their powerful phase of ONJT (+). Albert Ayler’s pastoral melody and savage sound of ONJT (+) exquisitely make a beautiful contrast. Play it as loud as your audio system and neighbors permit.
