Chordioid documents two distinctive approaches to contemporary chamber music, channeling the shared experience of J.P.A. Falzone and Morgan Evans-Weiler as composer-performers in various experimental contexts. Their collaboration, honed since 2016 in the Ordinary Affects ensemble, finds new voice in these recordings: a pairing of extended works that foreground restraint, attention, and timbral investigation. Falzone’s pieces present a delicate interplay between prepared piano and vibraphone. He leverages the sustaining power of both instruments - sometimes doubling, sometimes contrasting - to enrich the harmonic field without increasing density. His writing is marked by careful pacing and an atmosphere reminiscent of Feldman’s late works, yet maintains a personal rigor and clarity. Falzone’s compositional technique is rooted in devising systems with formal integrity, always striving for a balance between structure and subjective beauty.

Evans-Weiler’s “Locational Variations” embody the ethos of indeterminacy, using sets of pitch material with performers given wide latitude in how they traverse the given space. The result is a music of gentle abstraction and quiet concentration - variations that develop organically, guided as much by intuition as by design. As the duo explores subtle shifts in harmony and instrumentation, each performer contributes equally to the slow, immersive momentum of the album. Chordioid is not just a collection of new chamber works, but a testament to the patience, trust, and creative rapport between two accomplished musicians. The album stands out for its humility and depth, bridging a lineage that runs from early music to the present avant-garde. With its generous durations and softly luminous textures, Chordioid invites the listener to inhabit a space where sound unfolds gradually and meaning is cultivated from sustained, collective attention.
