This substantial anthology comprises five-disc in a deluxe boxet with a 230 pages fully illustrated booklet (in english, french and portuguese) at first seems like a daunting, overwhelming prospect: in addition to being a vast and sprawling collection of works, it's made up by a selection of artists whose work will (for the majority of listeners at least) be quite unfamiliar. In this outstanding selection we have some of the late 50s experiments by Reginaldo Carvalho (b. Guarabira, 1932) who composed his first concrète pieces on tape between 1956 and 1959, probably the first musique concrète work realized in Brazil; as well as Jorge Antunes (b. Rio de Janeiro, 1942), that in 1961 had created an electroacoustic piece in his home studio: after constructing a variety of generators, filters, modulators and other electronic equipment, Antunes founded the Studio for Chromo-Musical Research, and has since been reconized as the precursor of electronic music in Brazil.
