Bob Shad's Mainstream label in the early seventies was where a lot of young New York players got to make records nobody was watching, and the results are consistently more interesting than the label's reputation. Hal Galper had already put in time with Chet Baker and Cannonball Adderley and would go on to a decade with Phil Woods, and Wild Bird catches him in the electric period: Rhodes, funk rhythms, long modal vamps, and a rhythm section pushing hard against the harmony. Post-bop chops applied to fusion materials, made before either category had hardened into a formula.

Original Mainstream pressing. Deep catalogue, heavily sampled territory, and increasingly picked over by anyone who knows the label.
