Luc Ferrari, Various Artists

condition (book): NEW 9"x6", 128-page softbound book. The INA-GRM's Portraits polychromes series dedicated its inaugural volume to Ferrari, recognition from the institution he had both belonged to and quarreled with throughout his career. The book gathers multiple perspectives, multiple voices attempting to triangulate a figure who resisted easy definition.

Ferrari's relationship with the GRM was complicated. Pierre Schaeffer had founded the group; Ferrari studied there, worked there, and eventually broke with its orthodoxies. To see him honored in this format suggests reconciliation, or at least acknowledgment that his heresies had become history. The polychrome portrait is appropriately multiple: no single angle captures the whole. For researchers and devoted listeners, this volume provides context that the recordings alone cannot supply.
