"All the music on this album is improvised," says the sleeve, and it adds that no electronics are involved. Ovary Lodge began in 1973 as a trio of Keith Tippett, Frank Perry and bassist Roy Babbington, which made one album for RCA with Robert Fripp producing. By the time of this concert, at Nettlefold Hall in West Norwood on 6 August 1975, it had become a quartet with Julie Tippetts and Harry Miller on bass, playing free improvisation with no themes to fall back on.
The instruments travel a long way from the jazz club. Perry plays percussion, the sheng and the Chinese end-blown flute hsiao; Julie Tippetts adds erhu and sopranino recorder to her voice; Keith Tippett moves between piano, harmonium, recorder and maracas. Communal Travel takes up most of side two, right after a five-minute piece that Ogun printed under the title A Man Carrying A Drop Of Water On A Leaf Through A Thunderstorm.
