Gatefold sleeve
The trumpeter Mongezi Feza died in London on 14 December 1975, aged thirty. Nine days later the surviving Blue Notes, Dudu Pukwana on alto saxophone, Johnny Dyani on bass, Louis Moholo on drums and Chris McGregor on piano, met in a London rehearsal room and recorded this for him. They had left South Africa together in 1964, and Feza had been with them from the start of the exile.
The music is laid out in four movements, one per side, each around twenty minutes: free jazz that keeps circling back to township melody, with all four players adding percussion, whistles and voices. Dyani wrote most of the words, Z. Pallo Jordan translated the Xhosa for the sleeve, and McGregor contributed a poem. McGregor and Keith Beal mixed it in Hastings early in 1976, and it came out that year as a double album on Ogun, the London label run by Harry Miller and Hazel Miller.
