Peter Mennin, who served as president of the Juilliard School from 1962 to 1983, was a composer of considerable technical command working in a neo-romantic idiom that made no concessions to the serial avant-garde. His Piano Concerto, on RCA Red Seal, documents a composer for whom the orchestra was a natural and entirely mastered medium. Richard Yardumian, the Armenian-American composer from Philadelphia, drew on both his cultural heritage and a deeply personal religious faith in music that is among the most distinctive of the mid-century American mainstream.
