Saxophone, double bass and drums trio of Michael Foster, John Moran and Joey Sullivan, in two long parts recorded in Philadelphia on May 8th 2025.

Betrayal is an Ethical Necessity is a cassette by The Ghost, the trio of Michael Foster (tenor and soprano saxophones), John Moran (double bass) and Joey Sullivan (drums). It holds two long parts, recorded on May 8th 2025 by Randy Thaler at Beautiful World Syndicate in Philadelphia.

The trio approaches the free jazz tradition through a homoerotic, sadomasochistic and melancholic lens, drawing ideas from Jean Genet and the filmmaker Fred Halsted, among others. The title is a phrase from Leo Bersani's book Homos, and the record is dedicated to him. Where free jazz usually builds towards a cathartic peak, The Ghost hold back, edging and denying that release in search of other kinds of pleasure. Part I runs for more than 23 minutes, Part II for about 17.

Mixed and mastered by Jon Lipscomb, photography by Meghan Desmond. Limited edition cassette on Dinzu Artefacts, released October 30th 2026.
