*In process of stocking.* Paul G. Smyth is an Irish pianist who has worked with such innovative free improvisers as Evan Parker, John Russel, Peter Brötzmann, Derek Bailey and Keiji Haino, and runs the Weekertoft label. John Wiese is an American electronics musician, known for the Sissy Spacek project as well as his work with Sunn O))), Wolf Eyes, Merzbow and Evan Parker. The duo of Smyth and Wiese was recorded at the National Concert Hall in Dublin in February 2015.
"The Outlier" is a 54-minute intriguing and minimalist, free improvised ambient soundscape. Smyth plays on a prepared piano and often inside the piano, and transforms its whole body into an otherworldly sound generator and a highly resonant percussive machine. The prepared piano’s mutated and dissonant sounds often blend into Wiese’s suggestive industrial electronics and create a dense sonic entity. Furthermore, this new sonic entity suggests a strange yet fragile balance and spacious but deep listening dynamics that clearly avoid dramatic narrative but have some weird lyrical overtones towards its end. Apparently, the deep listening spirit of this meeting sharpens also the listener’s sensitivity to sounds in all shapes and all sonorities and eventually offers a deeply immersive listening experience into a whole universe of nuanced, imaginary sounds. - Eyal Hareuveni, Salt Peanuts
