Terumasa Hino came to Berlin for the Jazztage in November 1971 with Hi-Nology and Into the Heaven behind him and a reputation as the trumpeter who had opened Japanese jazz up. On the 7th he went into Audio-Studio Berlin with three Europeans and recorded Vibrations for Enja, a label then in its second year.
Heinz Sauer, the Frankfurt tenor from Albert Mangelsdorff's quintet, is the other horn. Peter Warren is on bass, Pierre Favre on drums and percussion, the pair who were about to record Trinity with Masahiko Sato. Horst Weber produced and wrote the notes.
Five tracks. A thirteen-minute Into the Heaven, the title piece from his Japanese album of the previous year. A brief I'm an Old Cowhand. Then Crackling, Ph-Ph-T and Dig It. Dusty Groove describes long tracks, often relatively free, moving between tighter arrangements and solos that take off, and finds an energy that surpasses some of Hino's free work at home. Hino plays flute as well as trumpet. By the mid-1970s he had moved to New York.
