Three long tracks, thirty-six minutes, cut live in front of a Montreux crowd. Are You Ready? is Harold Alexander's second and last record for Bob Thiele's Flying Dutchman, released in 1972.
Alexander, from Charlotte, North Carolina, had played with Big John Patton and with Elvin Jones before Thiele signed him. His flute is the main voice here, with soprano saxophone in reserve, and the band around him is the New York session pool of the period: Neal Creque on piano, Cornell Dupree on guitar, Victor Gaskin or Richard Davis on bass, David Lee Jr. or Bernard "Pretty" Purdie on drums, and Richard Landrum on conga and cowbell for the second side.
Two covers and one original. Herbie Hancock's Watermelon Man runs over ten minutes, Tommy Tucker's High Heel Sneakers the same, and Quick City Revisited, sixteen minutes, closes. Ron Wynn at AllMusic thought the remakes good and Alexander more dynamic on flute than on saxophone. Freeform.org, which catalogues this corner of the label, calls it one of the lost funky albums on Flying Dutchman and a hard one to find.
Alexander made one more record, Raw Root for Atlantic in 1974, and then withdrew. Japanese CD edition from Solid's Flying Dutchman series.
