Berlin, 6 November 1976, the Berliner Jazztage. Albert Mangelsdorff walks on with Jaco Pastorius and Alphonse Mouzon and no other horn, no chord instrument. Trombone, electric bass, drums. MPS taped it and issued it in 1977 as Trilogue - Live at the Berlin Jazz Days.

Mangelsdorff had spent the early 1970s making the trombone a solo instrument, with the multiphonic technique of singing into the horn while playing, documented on Trombirds (1972) and at the Munich Olympics. The trio records that followed put that voice against different rhythm sections: Palle Danielsson and Elvin Jones on The Wide Point the year before, Jean-François Jenny-Clark and Ronald Shannon Jackson in Montreux in 1980. This one is the electric one. Pastorius was a year past his Epic debut and inside Weather Report; Mouzon had come through McCoy Tyner and Larry Coryell's Eleventh House.

Five pieces, all long, mixed afterwards at Tonstudio Bauer by Carlos Albrecht. MPS reissued it in the 2008 anniversary series alongside the Montreux record under the title Mangelsdorff Live. The current Solid CD spells the title Triloque, as on some MPS pressings.
