First issue of the American art/music magazine View. View, the Crown Point Press magazine, first issue, April 1978 - dedicated entirely to John Cage and marking the beginning of his sustained engagement with the press's printmaking programme. Crown Point Press, under Kathan Brown's direction, had invited Cage to work there in January 1978; he produced his first etchings that month and returned almost every year until his death in 1992. The View publication documents this inaugural collaboration: an artist at the start of a new practice, the printmaking studio as a site of discovery. First issues of artist-focused publications of this kind are among the more collectible artifacts of the conceptual art world, and this one documents a moment of genuine artistic beginning. The intersection of Cage's visual practice and his musical and literary ideas would deepen significantly across the following decade.
