This month's Electronic Sound cover feature is the fascinating story of Tangerine Dream's 'Phaedra' album and we're bundling the issue with an exclusive orange vinyl seven-inch featuring edits of two tracks from this groundbreaking 1974 release.
Tangerine Dream’s debut for Richard Branson’s still-shiny Virgin label, 'Phaedra' came out exactly 50 years ago and was greeted with a mixture of curiosity, excitement, confusion and contempt. While electronic music was nothing new by this point, the se…
Huge Tip! An emotionally charged and bizarrely evocative look at radical environmental advocacy groups, mainly Earth First! and Earth Liberation Front, channeled through the memories of the Swedish Plogbill-movement and their actions throughout the early 90's. Monologue, snippets of interview segments, protest songs and site recordings are mixed up with the rather raw kosmische synth music Arv & Miljö has explored during the last couple of years. The result is a mesmerizing and multi-faceted aud…

*100 copies limited edition* "The idea came to us during a drunken conversation in a South London pub with Philippe from the Tapeworm label," says François Kirmann Gamaury aka Franz Kirmann aka Dj Salinger - a French producer who has been based in London for over twenty years. "Voyage voyage voyage" is a mixtape. But not in the traditional sense of the word. Kirmann calls it a subjective mixtape, where the tracks are not played as they are, but presented as they are felt by the artist. A little …
The Tapeworm celebrates its 15th anniversary in 2024. Its first tape was 2009's "Spool" by the much-missed Philip Jeck. To honour his memory, Jay Glass Dubs unwinds "Spool" in a new hour-long composition using Jeck's tape as his primary sound source. This tape was commissioned for "The Worm Rose Of Athens", two evenings of performances curated by Stellage, 1-2 March 2024, Athens. Written, recorded, produced and mixed by Dimitris Papadatos, Athens, 2024. With special thanks to Mary Prestidge.
"Music gives us a place to be lost. Washing away thought, place, time and identity. It’s in the falling into the river, the dream, that we find just who we could be”. Classically trained cellist, composer and storyteller Lihla (Lih Qun Wong) presents her debut album, ‘Socha’ for A Strangely Isolated Place. Combining a vast instrumental skillset of piano, cello, electronics and spoken word, she crafts intensely immersive aural-hallucinatory worlds of intricately shifting landscapes.

*2024 stock* Sergio Armaroli is certainly considerable among the most important musicians on the contemporary scene. An unparalleled performer in his own right, this monographic disc gives us some of his most important chamber masterpieces while offering a glimpse into his compositional output that is no less than the many composers he has found himself interpreting during his long career. The musicians who take part in this composite project are of the highest caliber, such as Irvine Arditti wh…
*2024 stock* Sergio Armaroli, composer, percussionist, jazz player, poet and painter, can consider himself a musician and even more a complete artist. "Vice-Versa" is his latest project that collects works dedicated to electronic and concrete music, united with each other by their inspiration to important figures from the world of both music and cinema such as Buster Keaton, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Charles Ives, John Cage, Luc Ferrari, Demetrio Stratos, Nanni Balestrini, Luigi Russolo until arriv…
*300 copies limited edition* Once again Lino surprises us. Always a poet of silences and strictly acoustic sounds, now he offers an album where synthetic sounds are the protagonists. On the other hand, since the time of the collaborations with Franco Battiato, the VCS3 has been in the poetics of Lino and Franco. Thus, as often happens, even the new and the old are in sympathetic symbiosis. And this album is the definitive proof of this. What makes it truly incredible is that it doesn't matter wh…
With the demise of Wire in 1980, founding members Bruce Gilbert and Graham Lewis joined forces to create Dome. With the assistance of engineer Eric Radcliffe and his Blackwing Studio, Dome took the ethic of "using the studio as a compositional tool" and recorded and released three albums on their own label in the space of 12 months: Dome (1980), Dome 2 (1980), and Dome 3 (1981). A final fourth album, Will You Speak This Word: Dome IV was released on the Norwegian Uniton label in 1982. These albu…

Opt for the path less trodden — allow yourself to stray from it, even — and you might find, buried in the bracken, deep in the trees, a shining modernist monolith. Liquid as a mirror, glinting in the leaf-broken sun, it lies in wait off the beaten tracks of North Yorkshire, South Wales, or the A508 out of Milton Keynes. Or perhaps it is all of these places simultaneously and none of them: an amalgam of the wayside walks of the British Isles, accessed only by the maps of the mind. Heeding the cal…
Nuno Loureiro disfigures sound into an array of urban memories. His music evokes an ambient sensitivity crafted from subtly ascending melodies, often eschewing the rhythmic beat. Sonic landscapes soaring in the stratosphere yet maintaining a grounded, soulful essence. Lua Onus sees Nuno Loureiro stepping into the light for the first time, shedding the anonymity of a moniker. The album, released on Superpang, takes pride in its minimalism, which proves effective in conjuring dreamlike experiences…

Vanishing is the unique creative project of Gareth Smith, a working class time-served engineer turned artistic world builder who has traded in his toolbox for the means to write evocative music and resonant lyrics. His stunning new album Shelter Of The Opaque seizes quotidian reality and either scrapes away at the veneer to reveal the awful machinery of how things are underneath or overlays it with a gossamer filigree to suggest how they could be instead. The musician – who was born in Hull but …
An edit-reissue of this gargantuan double cassette released back in 2014 under the Typhonian Highlife moniker, 'H.R. Giger's Studiolo' finds netherworld voyager Spencer Clark at a particularly beguiling conjunction of his labyrinthine-esque soundworld. With complete disregard for linear timelines and trajectories, 'H.R. Giger's Studiolo' finds both inspiration in the swiss master's vision and the Cenobite iconography previously explored by Clark on Fourth World Magazine's 'Pinhead in Fantasia'. …
