1962 Indian LP on Parlophone with recordings of South Indian Carnatic classical music by master vocalist and veena player. Never re-issued on either LP or CD.

condition (record/cover): NM / VG+ (small writing on back and general wear)

M.S. Subbulakshmi was the voice of Carnatic music in the twentieth century, the singer who performed at the United Nations in 1966 and whose recordings of the Suprabhatam still wake up temples across South India every morning. This Parlophone LP, issued by EMI India, pairs her with the veena master K.S. Narayanaswami, and it is a rare document of a great vocalist alongside the instrument that most closely shadows the Carnatic voice.

Subbulakshmi's line is all steadiness, the ornaments perfectly placed, a devotional intensity that never becomes a display. Indian Parlophone pressing, PMAE series, the label on which so many of the first Carnatic LPs appeared. Play it early in the morning.
