Norman Granz built Pablo in the seventies as a place where the great swing and bop players could keep working without anyone asking them to modernise, and Milt Jackson was one of its central figures. Free of the Modern Jazz Quartet's careful chamber discipline, Bags plays here exactly as he liked to: blues-drenched, unhurried, with that slow vibrato setting and a sense of time so relaxed it seems to bend the tempo around itself. Feelings is a ballad-heavy programme and the sound of the vibraphone is captured beautifully. Nobody has ever made the instrument sound this warm.
