Studio Saravah, Paris, August 15th 1969, a single afternoon, thirteen musicians. Sunny Murray had already dismantled the function of the drum kit twice over - with Cecil Taylor, then alongside Albert Ayler - and had followed the wave of American players who travelled to the Pan-African Festival in Algiers and on to Paris. What he assembled for this session is extraordinary: Archie Shepp, Roscoe Mitchell, Lester Bowie, Grachan Moncur III, Clifford Thornton, Kenneth Terroade, Dave Burrell, Alan Silva, Malachi Favors and the singer Jeanne Lee. "Suns Of Africa" fills a side and is one of the warmest and least abrasive things the free jazz movement produced.

Original French BYG pressing, third volume of the Actuel series, laminated gatefold. A landmark of the whole Paris moment.
